A: At nineteen years of age the last thing you need to worry about is DHEA levels in your body. You are probably producing more DHEA than you ever will at any other time of your life.
DHEA is just one of the many building blocks used by the body to manufacture testosterone. DHEA levels start to decline somewhere between our mid to late 20’s. The prime candidates for DHEA use are men over the age of 30. Basically the older you are the more beneficial supplemental DHEA will be.
Generally, when you reintroduce DHEA into your body, which is probably already low in DHEA, your body can manufacture more testosterone. Now don’t let the word testosterone scare you. This hormone has a lot more to do with overall health than it does with bodybuilding.
As men and women age (yes I said women) they naturally produce less testosterone. This is one of the major reasons it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain muscle mass and keep body fat levels low. Testosterone is also a major link to estrogen production (the main female hormone). Men who use DHEA can expect much faster recuperation times, and when training properly, increased lean muscle development and a reduction in body fat levels.
Women who use DHEA are perhaps the luckiest of the bunch. Using DHEA will give the same benefits as the guys, increased muscle tone and reduced body fat levels, but it will also increase natural estrogen levels. This is like a double punch against osteoporosis, without any of the many side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy.
Now don’t mistake DHEA for the magic pill because it’s not. It is however a very effective way to maintain more youthful hormonal levels when used in conjunction with an exercise program. If you’re not exercising you can still use DHEA, but to truly improve your health you’ve got to work your body.
A typical dosage is 25 mg to 50 mg per day. A 1 month on, 3 - 4 week off cycle is a simple way to get started. If you’re over thirty, you may want to give DHEA some serious thought, it may be the boost your training’s been looking for.
